Ojai is surrounded by mountains you would not believe. For avid trail runners (and of course, hikers) and outdoor enthusiasts, it's a true trail-running haven. Whether you're a local or visiting to explore Ojai's unique lifestyle, hitting the trails here is an experience that connects you with nature, elevates your fitness, and truly feeds your soul. My younger brother and I have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours running Ojai’s mountain ridges, trails, and canyons. With access to the internet, it’s quite simple to find Ojai’s main trail destinations and routes. That said, here are three amazing routes you may not have heard of, all of which branch off popular trailheads. These are exceptional hiking trails as well.
Horn Canyon Trailhead to The Pines
Distance: 2.58 miles there | 2.58 miles back | ~5 miles total
Elevation gain: +1,850 ft | -1,850 ft
Description: The first mile leads you through 4-5 river crossings with a steady and manageable incline—the calm before the storm. The next 1.5 miles consist of rigorous climbing, switchbacks, and occasional overgrown brush. Do not be deterred, however—you will be rewarded with one of the best west-facing views in Ojai. It is worth every single stride.
Pratt Trail to Cozy Del Trail Juncture
Distance: 2 miles there | 2 miles back | 4 miles total
Elevation gain: +1,100 ft | -1,100 ft
Description: Pratt Trail to Cozy Del Trail juncture is a shorter route with spectacular views and steep climbing. It’s a mix of single-track trail and fire road. You’ll take Pratt all the way up to the junction, where you have the option to continue further up Pratt or head back down on Cozy Del. The drastic elevation gain over a shorter distance is a great bang for your buck. The view is unbeatable.
Gridley to Nordhoff Road (Ridgeline)
Distance: 5.8 miles there | 5.8 miles back | ~11.6 miles total
Elevation gain: +2,618 ft | -2,618 ft
Description: Gridley Trailhead to Nordhoff Road is an incredible climb. The first 3.5 miles feature a steady incline and are quite manageable. The last 2 miles are steeper with large switchbacks. You don’t need to make it to the ridgeline to enjoy breathtaking views. Since 5.8 miles of climbing is exhausting, you may want to build up to it. Gridley is one of the best trails in Ojai.
